


Course: Charcoal Drawing fundamentals (4 weeks)
About This Course:
In this 4-week charcoal drawing course, we explore the traditional drawing medium of charcoal, its basic characteristics, tools, and surfaces. Through progressive exercises, you’ll learn to manipulate these materials while learning foundational drawing principles - ideal for beginners or artists seeking to strengthen their observational skills.
Breakdown:
Week 1: Line + Form
Draw basic forms (spheres, cubes) with vine charcoal.
Focus: Contour lines, gesture, and proportional measuring techniques.
Week 2: Value + Depth
Shade geometric objects with powdered charcoal.
Focus: 5-step value scales, light logic, and atmospheric perspective
Week 3: Texture + Perspective
Render objects (glass, fabric, and wood) with compressed charcoal.
Focus: Surface imitation, 1-point perspective, and negative space.
Week 4: Composition
Final still life combining all techniques.
Focus: Tonal balance, focal points, and fixative application demo.
Course Purpose:
This course is designed to build confidence in observational drawing while embracing charcoal’s expressive potential. By the end, you’ll have a portfolio of studies and a finished piece ready for display.

Vine/willow charcoal (1 package) Any brand
Charcoal pencils – (General's Charcoal Pencil Kit, Assorted Hardness, Set of 5)
Compressed charcoal (Compressed Charcoal Sticks 4/Pkg-Black - Soft Assorted)
Newsprint
11x14” (or larger) heavyweight drawing paper – (eg. Strathmore 400 Series Heavyweight Drawing Pad, Medium Surface, 9"x12")
Kneaded eraser
Blending stump
Hi-polymer eraser (or white plastic eraser)
